For Nursing Students
Guidelines Governing Student Nurses at St. Joseph Hospital (SJH)
1. Uniforms :
a. Student uniforms are required while participating in clinical experiences and returning after hours for chart review. Students are expected to adhere to the dress code policy of the hospital.
2. ID Badges :
a. Photo ID badges must be worn by all faculty and students while attending clinical assignments at the hospital.
3. Parking :
a. Parking is provided for all students in the areas marked “Employee Parking."
b. Do not park in these areas: Physician and Visitor Parking, Northern California Community Blood Bank.
c. Due to construction, parking at SJH is limited. Additional parking is available at the General Hospital (GH) Campus – northern parking lot. Do not park in the front parking lot which is reserved for patients .
Shuttle service to and from the GH campus is available from 6:00am until 11:15pm. Wait at the General Hospital main entrance and look for the white shuttle .
d. Locking vehicles and placing valuables out of view will enhance security. Students are encouraged to walk with others persons to the parking lot. If you cannot find someone else to walk with, especially after dark, we encourage you to go to the lobby switchboard operator and request a security escort.
4. Smoke Free Campus :
a. St. Joseph Hospital is a smoke free campus. Smoking is not permitted at St. Joseph Hospital, the General Hospital Campus, nor the Surgery Center. Please refrain from smoking in the vicinity of our neighbors: Teachers Pet Pre-School, Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints and the Northern California Community Blood Bank.
5. Clinical Responsibilities :
a. Patient report : Students must receive a patient report to find out their patient’s needs, scheduled tests, lab results and condition. It is imperative you notify the primary care nurse when there is a change in your patient’s condition or a problem with equipment. You must report off to the primary care nurse when leaving the floor or at the end of your clinical day.
b. Clinical Skills / Procedures : The instructor must be present if the student has not attained clinical competency in a procedure. Your instructor will provide guidance about which skills may be performed independently or may be performed with the supervision of a staff RN.
c. Medications : Students are to demonstrate safe medication practices. This includes knowledge of the five rights to medication administration, medication action, safe dosage for adults, seniors and children, side effects and special considerations for administration.
d. Documentation : Document care provided. Have all entries in the patient’s medical record reviewed by the instructor prior to making the entry and/or end of shift and co-signed by instructor or supervising RN. Use only hospital-approved abbreviations.
6. Performance Restrictions For Nursing Students
a. Students may not perform the following :
• Administer chemotherapeutic agents
• Pick up blood from the Lab
• Prepare/administer emergency medications
• Conduct point of care testing UNLESS hospital certification requirements have been met
• Participate in emergency response for cardiac/respiratory arrest beyond that of a first responder
• Provide care to the following patient populations: patients who are inmates, patients in respiratory isolation requiring individually fitted masks, patients with radiation implants
b. Students may perform the activities listed below only if the following conditions are met: activity is within the student’s scope of practice; performed under the direct supervision of the instructor or, with instructor consent, by a staff member
• Prepare and/or Administer of the following:
• Drip/titrated medications including heparin and insulin
• IV push and piggyback medications
• Pediatric medications
• Controlled substances
• Administer blood/blood products: 2 licensed nursing staff must conduct the unit/patient verification procedure and co-sign in the appropriate spaces on the Blood Transfusion Record.
• Initiate, change or discontinue a PCA device: 2 staff RNs must independently verify correct drug solution, drug dilution and pump programming with initial set-up or changes in pump programming; and remaining syringe volume when PCA therapy is discontinued.
• Provide Care as relates to the following:
• Central Lines: Medications administration, blood withdrawal, site care, dressing changes
• Implanted Ports: Medication administration, accessing, blood withdrawal, de-accessing, site care, dressing changes
• Trach Care: suctioning of, cleaning, stoma care
• Epidurals: assessments, supplemental medication administration
• PCAs: assessments, supplemental medication administration
• Transfers: Acute & SNF
• IV starts
Student Orientation Requirements
As part of your orientation to St. Joseph Hospital you are required to complete the following prior to starting your clinical rotation at the hospital :
- View the Hospital / Safety Orientation
- 2. Print out and take the Orientation Test
- Read the Corporate Compliance Handbook . Note: this is the same booklet for both SJH and RMH. You need only read it once for the duration of your academic program, i.e., if you read it prior to a clinical at RMH, you don’t need to repeat for SJH.
Print, read and sign the Student Acknowledgements for Abuse Reporting ,
Confidentiality , and
Corporate Compliance . Note: signatures on these forms apply to both SJH and RMH. Signed acknowledgement statements are good for the duration of your academic program.
- Return the completed orientation test and signed student acknowledgements to your clinical instructor.
